Pacific Coast Bike Route: Day 02

The legs made the pedals turn at 12:20, before yesterday, but still late, but yesterday we arrived late, it will always be an excuse! We used some old streets parallel to the I5 from Blaine to Bellingham and we had to ask for directions only once! There were no good road signs so you never know if you are lost or going in the right direction! The roads had slopes and descents but nothing to complain about. The landscapes were much greener after the town of Bellingham on Chuckanut Drive.

It is a scenic drive and was the first highway in Washington State. Chuckanut is a Native term which in English means "long beach far from a narrow entrance. Lots of things to see: wild animals like deer, rabbits and many eagles! Farms everywhere after Chuckanut full of cows, bison and goats breeding. The Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway, also known as  State Route 11that stretches about 36. Km  between Burlington and Bellingham.

Ellie's political remark: we saw a lot more stickers on Ron Paul 2012's bumper (retired politician) than street signs, who knows why ?????

Really unbelievable, there were no road signs anywhere. We went to Edison and Bay View, which were along the coast. During the day it was a mix of rain that came and went but no big rain so we were not too wet! But it was a bit cold (for Ellie) but colder (for Patrizia - the warm-blooded Italian).

On the highway and the only road there were several incredible eagles that flew on all sides. One of them landed on the road and very close to us (I don't think he was hungry since there was nothing to hunt, who knows! Oh maybe he wanted to scare us eh :) We took a leisurely lunch by the side of the road near the start of Chuckanut Drive.

We started on Highway 20 towards Whidbey Island (is in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, Washington) it was around 18:30 and the traffic change was very intense calling it: zoom, zoom, zoom and more zoom! It looks like a Mazda advertisement. Finally we found a road sign! We thought about going to Anacortes but we saw a great hotel with Wifi right at the junction for Whidbey, so we stopped there for the night!

Perfect place that we avoided the rain that was getting stronger and stronger was on its way to tomorrow. We went at a mini mart  for grocery shopping  and right next to the hotel, very lucky! Patrizia was out taking care of the bicycles and next to it there was a Pub with a patio and people were sitting and they were intrigued of our bicycles, by our trip and by Patrizia's accent an interesting conversation was born.

Dinner: we bought a microwave gourmet: Chicken pot pie and burritos. Yes, we are in America!

After a good dinner and a relaxing night we are ready for tomorrow and who knows, maybe we will travel a mega km or a day not so mega km, depending on the weather or the terrain. So far we feel in good shape, and we haven't really spent long hours on the saddle yet. It's good to get used to being in the saddle again!
