Hello all and welcome to our blog of biking the Pacific Coast Route!
We will talk about our journey started just as we wanted without established timetables. Now we are ready for the adventure...
The first day is always the most difficult to deal with :-)! We left Vancouver at 5:30 pm and followed a windy route through the city of Surrey. We had a good time crossing the Alex Fraser Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Fraser River and a nice jogger with his dog showed us the right way!
Patrizia was right and Ellie was wrong! Then through the city of Surrey and on to 168th street which was closed to car traffic due to construction work. We ignored the signs and continued to ride. We arrived at the border at 10:30 pmand The border crossing went super smoothly and met border guards including a customs officer who will go to Italy in September and his parents are great cyclists!
Two other customs officers were admiring the bikes outside because we left the lights on. They were very helpful and shivering like us but they had gloves on (making us feel colder)!
They practiced several languages with us and ended with a Buona Notte! Tip of the day: crossing the customs by bike late, no complications and nice customs officers and moreover in the interior for passport control it was warm a good place to warm up,:-)
As soon as a passed the border and after a long climb that never ended (we call it the hill that keeps the weak out of the United States), and after reaching the end of the climb in the evening hours in the dark we reached Blaine and stayed at the International Motel. The people we met after our arrival in Blaine were very friendly. Fortunately, next door was a pub open until 2am next to the motel.
We ate a hamburger. We met 2 guys traveling with a yacht that they had anchored somewhere at the port. We started talking about their experiences in Europe. They had started a conversation about eating: their very varied tastes, a boy really loved meat and vegetables, no carbohydrates, while the other gave us lessons on carbohydrates. Oh live the diversity!
