This morning we stopped for a great breakfast on Whidbey Island at a coffee shop drive through (bike ride), wow! The person who took our order was very kind, offering to fill our water bottles with ice or without. Patrizia said "NO ICE, TOO COLD!" He also gave us a fantastic map for bicycles showing our route in detail .. what a nice person!
Along the way there were many fighter jets flying from the US naval base, giving a sound and a feeling so different. Much better than the zoom, zoom, zoom of cars! We took a coastal route and saw parasail surfers having fun with the great Whidbey wind! Beautiful cottages and hobby farms. Along the road there was a horse that gave us a bit of a curious look: what are you doing, you are so slow, don't travel like the noise of "zoom, zoom, zoom!" Too used to that big fast traffic noise. In short, poor animals live with the zoom zoom from that endless traffic. A torture noise of vehicles: fast cars, trucks and others and finally less dangerous agricultural vehicles :)
The route was vast with climbs and descents, a little windy and particularly close to the ocean and it was sunny and warm uphill and shady downhill. Many clothing changes on this island ... cold, rain and sun!
There are still not many signs but Patrizia trusted Ellie in reading the map (high risk), but it worked. Arriving at the ferry to Port Townsend from Coupeville on Whidbey Island we had to wait only 10 minutes before departure, not bad! A pleasant short trip taking us back to the land of the picturesque village of Port Townsend. On the ferry, Patrizia had wanted to stay with the bikes and found some unique seats to sit on (a couple of logs) and we sat in bonfire style. But when the ferry left, we couldn't sit anymore, the waves were big (not like the typical BC, Canada Ferry routes), so we had to resist dancing with the ocean waves to stay in balance! The guy who worked in the ferry was so kind and friendly, he brought us maps, he gave us good advice and 2 oranges for the trip!
We met a friendly guy with the bike shuttle service between the ferries (so far over the past 20 years) and also his wife is commuting. He offered us his basement suite with kitchen and air mattress to stay for the night, but we wanted to keep going (we would have talked all night with them if we had stayed). Usually in Port Townsend it was not a cold month in June they called him: it was not a real June! It was really true that we had to wear gloves, sweater, shoe covers and a rain jacket to travel once we got off the ferry!
On the ferry we met two girls and a boy who was traveling by bicycle from Victoria (they had lots of MEC equipment, a good name for outdoor gear). Their destination was in San Francisco and they would sleep in Port Townsend is a city on the Quimper Peninsula in Jefferson County, Washington, United States.
We finished our ride in Port Hadlock by staying in a motel because it was still a bit too cold for camping. The motel girls were very nice and helpful, they gave us a lot of information on the local area and where we wanted to go! In the motel room, Patrizia had her stove at its maximum with her feet and every other part of her body plastered against the stove! We went shopping and in the room we prepared an excellent pasta and assorted salads.
We checked the forecast for tomorrow and Patrizia hopes to go camping, but we'll see!
A good day of easy touring!
