BLOG I DAY 28 I ITALY'S FOUR SEAS: A cycle tour along the Italian peninsula
October 11, 2023 Pesaro, Marche - Volano di Codigaro (FE), Emilia-Romagna I 153 Km
This morning I had breakfast in the same place and after loading the panniers on the bicycle I left the hotel at 6:50 am and as the two cyclists had advised me to see the eastern seafront with its attractions and it was very beautiful even under a cloudy sky.
The first stretch - On the deserted seafront with only very few people walking there was a very high Ferris wheel and also a lovely sculpture The Sfera Grande ball also known as the Pomodoro sphere built in bronze 350 meters high created by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro and is the symbol of Pesaro.
While in a small square the city of Pesaro dedicated a work to Valentino Rossi, a green and black helmet 4 meters high and 6 meters long is an Italian racing driver, former professional motorcycle road racer and nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion. Incredibly beautiful and after a few photographs I continued on the Bicipolitana cycle path, an organization of the urban cycle path network and then continued pedaling but on the SS 16 road and the road ran on hilly terrain and a bit uphill through the Monte San Bartolo Natural Park is a mountain located in the Marche and overlooks the Adriatic Sea with a spectacular cliff.
The second stretch - after which the downhill road took me to the coast passing by the seaside resorts and I stopped at the seaside resort of Riccione located in the Emilia-Romagna region which was also a deserted area by now it was clear that the wide beaches of white sand were not they would have been more used for bathing while in the summer it is known for its vibrant party scene, water parks and broad beaches.
The third stretch - After admiring the surroundings and taking a few photos including the large colored sign with Riccione overlooking the beach. Then I continued to spin the two wheels of my bicycle passing through the seaside town of Bellaria - Igea Marina, there too I stopped at the large sign written Bellaria and stopped to look at the fishermen who were fishing on the Uso river which flows into the Adriatic Sea. It was a very nice place with benches and some but not large boats moored in the river.
The fourth stretch - Afterwards I cycled on the Rafaella Carra was an Italian singer, dancer, television presenter, actress and model. cycle path which had been suggested by Alberto, a very nice friend and relative. It is a cycle path that the municipality had built after the death of Rafaella Carra who had a great connection that the artist had with the city. Along the cycle path that runs near the beaches and seaside resorts there are photographs of the famous artist.
The fifth stretch - Then continuing with the sea always as the protagonist and once I reached the is a port town of Cesenatico I stopped at a place with outdoor tables that made Piadina Romagnola is a typical food of Emilia Romagnas also known as Flatbread.
While I was enjoying the delicious piadina I met an Italian-Canadian person who was born in Cesenatico and had lived for years in Torronto, one of the provinces of Canada. But he had sold his company in Canada to return to live where he was born, telling me that for him Italy was too beautiful and he missed it and there's no doubt about it! Then we said hello and I continued seeing a romantic point "a big heart with written - the Heart of Romagna". A selfie point for a photograph but I had taken the photograph by leaning my travel friend, my bicycle named Girasole leaning against the big heart and what a beautiful shot!
The sixth stretch - After passing through other seaside resorts I arrived at the seaside of Lido di Classe, one of the nine seaside resorts in Ravenna and more or less from that point the road headed a little further inland characterized by agricultural landscapes where I had seen an agricultural field some bales of hay with the tricolor of the Italian flag drawn on them and then by chance I found myself in front of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe is a church located in the small village of Classe outside the municipality of Ravenna.
This magnificent Basilicata which I have only seen from the outside has been defined as the most imposing basilica of the early Christian period with its three naves without galleries. In the meadow near Basilicata there are scattered some bronze sculptures created by Davide Rivalta which depict five Mediterranean buffaloes and are facing towards Basilicata, a UNESCO world heritage site.
The seventh stretch - After having taken some photographs of the Basilica I continued coming across the Ravenna sign and after a few kilometers on my right the natural areas of Pialassa della Baiona is a lagoon environment with dense marsh vegetation, and near the lagoon capture areas there were some typical sheds fishing net with scale net used by fishermen. These structures are called Il Paddelone da pesca also called Il Bilancione da pesca.
The eighth stretch - Then I passed the town of Casal Borsetti, the northernmost beach town of Ravenna, and then I crossed a bridge and the canal passed underneath. The Reclamation Canal on the right of Reno, a beautiful canal with small boats moored. From that point I had cycled a stretch of the SS 309 Romea road which was well trafficked where I had met the Ferrara sign then the Comacchio road and from that point I had taken a road near the coast passed by Ravenna beaches which were on my right which were now few frequented by tourists and I was hoping to find an open accommodation since many were closed when passing by. But also nice because it was a different and wilder way to see them in the low season.
The ninth stretch - Then I passed the following beaches: Lido Spina, Lido degli Estensi, Lido degli Scacchi, Lido di Pomposa and right here I asked a local person for information if I had found an open place to sleep telling me it wasn't easy but he kindly made a phone call to an accommodation that was open and there was a free room. After saying thank you I continued pedaling but it was getting dark passing the Lido delle Nazione and finally the Lido di Volano and then turning left passing Volano and at one point there were some beautiful white horses grazing in a piece of land until reaching The Hotel Rurale Canneviè is a farmhouse in the Po Delta near Bosco della Mesola in Codigoro is a municipality in the Province of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region.
IThis stunning place is one of the oldest historic residences and is situated in an old fishing house of the eighteenth century, nestled in a peaceful, unique natural oasis and flora and fauna protected areai n the Natural Park of the Po Delta.
The last leg - After having placed them in my room and charging the batteries etc. I had to get back on the bicycle, turn on the lights because it was dark and go to a restaurant a few kilometers away because the local restaurant was closed and therefore closed.
The last and real stage of the evening was to park the bicycle in the place designated for the bicycles of the farmhouse and there was also another bicycle, another cycle tourist. Then I had dinner, it was very good, a shower, sent some messages, travel notes, obviously I had looked at Google maps and tomorrow I will be in the Veneto region and then I fell asleep.
