Today we started from Leggett expecting to do a lot of climbing. We were heading back to the highway and immediately saw a group of cyclists. We think more people are riding the coast now!
The cilmb over Leggett hill was full of switchbacks and no shoulders! Traffic is very light here because there aren't al ot of major cities here. The climb and descent was like a big zig zag and we had lots of fun! When we reached the bottom of the first climb, we could feel the chill of the ocean through the forest. It was very cold and different beause the day was actually very hot, 29 degrees today! It was defintely different to feel chilled on a hot day! We met up with more cyclists along the way. We think there are at least 20 cyclists around us, mostly going to San Francisco. So far, we've only met one person going to San Diego.
We had a second climb out of the forest and onto the coast! It was fantastic to see and feel the ocean again. We are now on the Shoreline Highway which is right along the coast. It is very up and down but we love it, the views are fantastic. We met up with the group of 4 girls we met earlier. Because one of them was having some knee problems, they decided to rent a car and take turns driving and riding. Good for them, a very smart idea to keep going!
We cycled through Fort Bragg which is the big city here and then we carried on to Mendocino which is where we stopped. We were hoping to find camping but no luck so we ended up at a beautiful English style inn, the Hill House. We are being pampered here:-)! There isn't a microwave in the room so the front desk warmed up our dinner and brought it to us, complete with nice plates and cutlery! We are having a great rest here!
