We left Nesika Beach at 12:30pm and we got onto Highway 101. The traffic was relatively light and we pedalled into Gold Beach. We had a long climb out and there was lots of work being done on the road. Many areas looked like they were sinking a bit, maybe the wet June weather was not good for the road!
The descent was great and fast. We had a tailwind and Patrizia was close to her record speed! Not quite 70 km/hr but getting close. She's hoping for the record on this trip.
We met a runner who was part of a group doing a 10,000 mile run around the USA! And we saw another runner later in the day in California with a torch doing the same run!
The road was along the coast and we loved the views. we passed one wind surfing competition, we could tell that California was close!
We stopped for a late lunch before the California State border. We went to the harbour at Brookings, the last town in Oregon. Patrizia had the company of a seagull and the ocean while Ellie went to get fish and chips and watched some golf on TV! Patrizia was waiting and texting:-)!
We crossed the border to California, yeah!!!! From that moment, the road was pretty flat and we were now on the Pacific Coast Bike route! The scenery was farmland, bigger trees (getting close to the Redwoods) and ocean. We had some headwinds but nothing too bad.
We arrived at Crescent City and came to a big campground.......! We got our spot, recharged the computers, set up the tent, went shopping, came back and settled down. We were just about to go for our shower when......a guy with an albino dachshund dropped by for a visit...or....? He invited us to stay at a free campground closeby, haha, and Patrizia said we already paid so we were staying here!
He finally left and we decided it was better to move our bikes inside the campground office. The office was closed but luckily, the camp manager came over to check on us to make sure the guy wasn't bothering us. We didn't feel too comfortable nor did the manager so we decided to move the bikes into the office (locked inside) and moved our tent and stuff over by the manager's site (his suggestion)!
We're all settled down now, showered and fed!
