We wake up with rain, expected and unfortunately the forecast is not good for the next few days either but he could also have been wrong. A good morning to my travel friend Arturo who had already prepared me coffee with a piece of chocolate and two biscuits. We dismantle our tents and after having organized our things and setting up our bicycles with travel bags we set off towards the city of Naples where we would pass and then I was to continue to cycle towards the Amalfi coast while he would go towards Pompeii but in fact we would meet again in the next few days in the city of Salerno or later.
The first stretch - Greeting the local animals and off to the adventure of the day, leaving the Quarantine Park, we skirted Lake Fusaro on a stretch of dirt road and then cycled on a local road taking us towards the sea coast in the Baia area. It was a privileged holiday resort for the Roman aristocracy and the imperial family a town situated on the northwest shore of the Gulf of Naples.
The second stretch - We continue cycling on the coast of the metropolitan city of Naples where we come across signs indicating the Underwater Archaeological Park of Baia, a protected marine area that houses the remains of the ancient city of Baia.
The third stretch - Then, We crossed Naples with bombs of rainwater, a violent storm and an intense hailstorm with flooded streets, people stuck in cars and we had to stop and take shelter from the storm almost everywhere so that we had crossed a tunnel where we were truly protected from the rain that was coming down heavily with sights of thunder and lightning and it wasn't just us there but also some motorcyclists who were also waiting for the storm to pass.
After a pause in the storm where it blocked us for about 30 minutes we continued to cycle in the rain but not so violently, continuing on the Neapolitan roads made of cobblestones and many of them flooded and with great caution we continued, stopping again on all sides to due to other storms.
The fourth stretch - After leaving the city of Naples the sky gave hope of a change in weather and we managed to stop on a bench without the rain where my friend had kept out some hard-boiled eggs that he had cooked in the previous days which we ate.
Arriving near the Torre Annunziata Centrale train station, I said goodbye to my friend who was going towards Pompeii and towards the Amalfi coast in Sorrento.
The fifth stretch - I continued with the coast and the sea always in sight with a more promising sky given that it was clearing and there were some pieces of blue sky crossing the towns of Castellamare di Sabbia and with ups and downs and then more slowly uphill until reaching Vico Equance and Montechiaro with spectacular panoramic views until you reach the town of Sorrento.
The sixth stretch - I continued with the coast and the sea always in sight, with a more promising sky given that it was clearing up and there were some pieces of blue sky. I crossed the towns of Castellamare di Sabbia and with the ups and downs of the coastal road and then more steeply uphill until reaching Vico Equance and Montechiaro with spectacular panoramic views until reaching the small charming town of Sorrento nestled on white cliffs and overlooking the magnificent views of the Gulf of Naples. Sorrento is located on the Sorrentine Peninsula in the province of Naples in the Campania region.
Sorrento Peninsula & The Amalfi Coast in Campania
The Sorrento peninsula is a coastal part that overlooks the splendid Gulf of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea. On this side it is called the Sorrento coast, while the other part of the coast on the side that bathes the Gulf of Salerno is called the Amalfi coast in Campania. These areas are famous all over the world, you cycle through splendid narrow roads with various slopes with differences in height and continuous ups and downs which could be busy, but since I was in the low season I found them quite smooth.
The seventh stretch - I arrived in Sorrento and talked to a very nice guy who works in the cafeteria and he advised me to spend the night at the Seven Hostel telling me that it is located a short distance from Sorrento in the town of Sant'Agnello. After calling the hostel and I was lucky it was the only bed available, as well as I had already passed that place before reaching Sorrento and so I had to go back which I did with pleasure since I had never slept in this type of place hostel with more people in the room. I had only stayed at a hostel once before in Canada but it was a room for two people and even the rooms were divided into a female part and a male part.
The last leg - When I arrived at the town of San'Agnello there were signs for the hostel and so I had no difficulty finding it. The person who worked at the reception was very hospitable; she had me put the bicycle in a safe place, then gave us the room keys and some white sheets. Inside I was wondering to myself where have I ended up! I love camping and now I will be locked in a room with other people I don't know.
And the adventure continues, going up the stairs on two floors, there would be the elevator that I hadn't taken. Entered the large room with bunk beds and luckily mine was on the first floor. In the bunk beds next to us there were a group of people from Brazil on holiday in Italy. We had a chat and then they were ready to walk and visit Sorrento. While I had taken a shower and then took a walk here and there and then bought dinner at a supermarket. Back in the hostel there was a large room with armchairs and sofas and tables where I had dinner and had written only a few travel notes and looked at the Google map to get an idea of where I would arrive tomorrow. Night in unfamiliar company but a good experience!
