Pacific Coast Bike Route: Day 30
This morning was a little cloudy and misty. We could feel the moisture in the air as we left the hotel at 11:20am. The mist kept us cool for the ride and we knew that sooner or later, we would feel the warmth of the sun!
The ride from Sunset Beach along the highway was a bit noisy from the traffic but the shoulder was wide so we were fine. We went through a lot of beach resort towns, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and Capistrano Beach! All of these communities were full of surfers and lots of restaurants, very busy. But we stopped at Capistrano Beach for lunch because it was much quieter there and we were in a section away from any crowds or restaurant strip. A nice couple, one from Argentina, one from Mexico, came over to ask about the bike trip. They were interested in getting into biking! We had a nice talk!
We then headed into San Clemente and off the highway onto an old road that probably used to be the main road. It ran parallel to Highway 5 and this road had long sections where you can't access with cars so only bicycles and pedestrians. It was a really interesting ride! In one section we saw a memorial of "Ghost Bikes" (white bicycles , pink jerseys and lots of water bottles) at the side of the road. The writing was all faded but it looked like it was dedicated to the memory of a rider.
We rode on passed the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant into a campground at the San Onofre State Beach. It was a neat set up, to have a campground off an abandoned road! We then got into Camp Pendelton, a US Marine Base. The road goes through the base and there was a checkpoint with Marines that we had to go through. We rode through the base, it was huge and hen finally out and into Oceanside.
From there, we were on the olde Highway 101, now SR21, and went through more beach towns. We ended up in Del Mar, just at the edge of San Diego!
