We started off from San Simeon at 11:45am. What an interesting morning. There was a thick morning fog/mist off the ocean. It was cool in the mist but very warm in the sunny spots. Deciding what to wear was very hard!
We started off on the highway and it was nice and flat. We started moving a bit inland and we got out of the fog. The route was along a lot of nice, gentle rolling foothills. It was nice to be able to have some flat stretches! We carried on through Cambria and into Cayucos. We got off the highway here and went along the ocean through town. It was very nice. Ellie got hungry so we had a quick stop at a deli for a pastrami breakfast sandwich! Patrizia was very good, she wanted to wait for lunch!
We kept going into Morro Bay where we stopped for lunch at a nice beach in the state park. There was a pelican diving into the water, probably looking for lunch. We went into the campground and saw some interesting stone picnic tables and firepits, made in the Great Depression! So neat!
We headed through some back roads and met a couple on rental bikes who needed a little help. They had a flat tire with a spare tube but no pump! We helped them out and gave them one of Ellie's tubes, their spare tube had a lot of holes! We were trail angels today!
We stopped at a bike shop along the way to pick up some more spare tubes, just in case! Then we went through San Luis Obispo and onto Pismo Beach. We rode through downtown San Luis Obispo where the roads were closed to cars. They were setting up for a night festival. Lots of vendors and food carts set up. We probably would have stopped for dinner there if we were just an hour later!!! Very tantalizing but we kept going!
After Pismo Beach we stopped at Oceano. We would have kept going but the next town didn't have any camping or motels. We went to the beach sand dunes at Oceano. It was very interesting. This area is a big sand dune which is set up for campers to drive right onto the beach and camp. There are a lot of campers carrying ATVs to go along the sand dunes here. It's really a sand highway! So many cars driving along the beach sand dunes, very cool to see!
We're at a nice motel here and getting ready for a big ride tomorrow into Santa Barbara. This will be hopefully the last part of big hills! We'll see!
