We started off in the sunshine from Raymond. We had a great breakfast from a local place (egg and meat sandwiches: turkey for Patrizia and sausage for Ellie)! We saw some cyclists at the pub at noon! We didn't know if they were having breakfast or beer and lunch:-)! What we noticed from our room was they stayed there for a long time, hmmm, maybe more breakfast or more beer! Ehey!!!
There was a great bike path beside the highway, but we stayed on the highway because not so much vroom, vroom, vroom and no big trucks! We got to Southbend and saw piles of oyster shells! This would be a great place to stop for fresh seafood!
There was a headwind for a couple of hours so our speed was a little slow but the surroundings were nice and the road was pretty flat! The weather was sunny, finally, but cool in the shade. We kept going and going and going and we could see the ocean at last! It was very interesting because there were a lot of sea shells on the road thanks to the birds having a lovely seafood dinner!
We arrived at the Oregon border and we crossed the Astoria bridgeI The truss bridge that spans the mouth of the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington was at least 3 miles long and had virtually no bike lane (there was a big hill at the end of the bridge and cars could go up there, a bit scary to see), but for a while we had our own lane because there was construction on the bridge and traffic was blocked except for us :-)!
After the bridge, there were signs for the start of the Oregon Coast Bike Route! So we are now really excited to be along the ocean on the way to San Diego! We started onto a second bridge which had a wider shoulder and little shorter but with busier traffic.
We were thinking to get a motel at Seaside but luckily we found a private campground right on the way so we decided to stop and stay here! Camping at last!!! Patrizia found it a bit cold still so she's thinking that tomorrow is a motel night! But for now, we are keeping warm in the laundry room (after a great pasta dinner) with wifi! At dinner, Patrizia (Italian blood) was cold so she became the Michelin woman with 6 sweaters and 4 pants on! (Patrizia borrowed some stuff from Ellie)
It's very warm in the laundry room, maybe Patrizia will sleep here tonight:-)! (with earplugs because it's a bit noisy from the heater). Ellie is going to stay in the tent because she's a real Canadian used to a cold June-uary!
The route today was a lot flatter and interesting than before and crossing the 2 bridges was the excitement of the day!
