We left Goleta at 10:45am today.  We rode down the main road that runs parallel to the freeway and turned off to follow the route back to the coast and into Santa Barbara.  We got right along the beach and there was a multi-purpose bike path/walkway along the beach.  You have to share with pedestrians, pedal cars, etc!  It was neat to see everyone get along well on the path.  And the road along the beach was lined with palm trees.

We then rode through several suburbs parallel to the freeway, Highway 101 and zig zagged our way back to Highway 1 where bicycles are allowed but then had to zig zag through Ventura, Oxnard and Port Hueneme, all big suburbs along highway 1.  We couldn't really tell where their boundaries were, they're just all connected together.  We ended up at the edge of Point Mugu State Park, where we found a naval base with a Missile Park display.  It had so many different planes, missiles set up for everyone to look at.

After that, Highway 1 begins to actually look like a highway.  We rode right along the ocean and there were many beaches along the way, filled with people, cars and RV's!  Everyone was out enjoying the water sports!  We rode into Malibu, a huge long beach to start but then, it gets hilly through town!  The first hill was hard because the legs were not used to climbing (after few days of flat days) but after that, we were fine with all the other hills!  We were passed by the same guy we've seen for the last couple of days.  He said hi and commented on how he keeps running into us before he zoomed off!  He rides with only front panniers!

Lots of beautiful houses here and fancy restaurants!  This place caters to the $$$ crowd!  We finally got to an area where there were hotels but they were all filled up!  Too close to July 4th!  So, we carried on to Santa Monica.  It was starting to get dark now so we had to move it!  We got to the pier at Santa Monica (we're really in Los Angeles now) and it was completely alive! It's the Santa Monica Pier Carnival!  So many bright lights and people.  We went along the bike path a little further and found a nice hotel and grocery store.  We finally settled in around 10pm!
