BLOG I DAY 15 I ITALY'S FOUR SEAS: A cycle tour along the Italian peninsula
September 28, 2023 Longobardi Marina, Campania - Mileto, Calabria I 92.1 Km
Woke up to a good morning after a night spent wild between nature and unfinished construction and in the night when I woke up to the wind I heard blowing but not to the barking of the dogs.
The first stretch - After having rearranged our equipment, we head towards the SS 18 road with panoramic views of the sea and pass the "Scogli di Isca" Regional Marine Park in the Calabria region, a stretch of sea overlooking the southern end of the Coastal Chain, in the province of Cosenza. The Isca rocks, which are two, distant from the coast, are a natural monument of the sea. Then, while we were pedalling with Arturo he spotted a bracelet on the road that he picked up and had given to me which I immediately put on my wrist and we took the opportunity to stop and have breakfast obviously prepared by Arturo.
The second stretch - Next we head towards the small seaside resort town of Amantea is one of the most renowned seaside resorts in Calabria. This pretty town is located between the mountains and overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and is also famous for its medieval village on top of a hill where there is an incredible view of the coast of the Riviera dei Cedri. Then passing the localities of Campora San Giovanni is a fraction of the comune (municipality) of Amantea. is n the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region.
After that we had passed by La Vota lakes which are a series of brackish water lakes along the coast of the municipality of Gizzeria and finally the locality of Ginzeria Lido is a seaside town in central Calabria in the province of Catanzaro. In this very quiet location (certainly not in high season) with its beautiful beaches and a local person speaking while we were taking a break eating black grapes and filling our bottles with water from the fountain had told us that they are famous for the International kite surfing competitions. Then we started pedalling again and saw wild persimmon plants on the side of the road and obviously we picked some of them and how delicious they were!
The third stretch - Then we continued along the road near the Lamezia Terme airport. The road always has spectacular views of the sea, passing near the Ginsgero Lido airport, the sea then flows towards the hinterland in the town of Pizzo, slowly climbing up to reach Vibo Valente. where you can admire a beautiful coastline and mountains, and bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea and overlooking the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. From the town of Vibo Valente there is a point where there would have been other famous directions to see including here the seaside village of Tropea famous for its spectacular cliff-side position and beautiful transparent sea which overlooks the beaches of the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods). But we had preferred to continue inland, reaching a height difference of 520 meters from the sea and then passing the town near San Constantino Calabro.
The fourth stretch - The road went downhill a bit, passing by a park that could have been a good place for wild camping but then I changed my mind while my friend said it was ok to stop there. Speaking with a local person who was in the garden in his house who had offered us some water, he said that in the evening wild boars and stray dogs roamed the park and since the sky was cloudy and it was starting to rain I preferred to continue and find a B&B to somewhere until we arrived at the town of Mileto is a comune in the Province of Vibo Valentia in the Calabria region.
The last leg - The evening ended spending the night with Sonia and Alessia at their Bed and Breakfast, offering charming, comfortable accommodations, very nice and super clean. After having placed our things in the room we took a walk in the small town exploring the surroundings. We had found an open supermarket where we bought our dinner which we ate in the cozy seating area of the B&B. The evening ended with recharging the power banks etc., the various texts, letting people know where I was and with the desire for tomorrow's ride and who knows what an adventure it will be!
