Bicycle Tour Around Como Lake -  Part #4  Colico - Varenna - Lecco - Lombady - Italy

A little about Colico. Colico is a lovely village at the foot of a breathtaking view of the gigantic granite pyramidal formation del Monte Legnone at 2,609 meters high which is the highest peak in the Lake Como area.

This beautiful little resort is a  stunning destination for lovers of outdoor experiences and offers a wide choice of excursions  for every taste between mountains and the lake.

The presence of the winds that characterize this area make the waters of Colico "a windy corner of paradise” and a suitable place to play including regattas, sailing boats, kayaking, standing boards, windsurfing and has hosted the Italian round of World Championship kitesurfing.

The Legnone mountain gives us a good morning sight with a breathtaking view from the terrace of the house of my brother Claudio and his wife Elena. Elena wakes us up early with a great breakfast and our day begins with a beautiful sunny and cold day and there was still snow on the back roads that had fallen the previous night when I stayed with them. This stretch that will end in the city of Como. I was in the company of Claudio, a sports-lover of hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and motorcycle riding, but also a bicycle lover. We packed up the bike bags and off we went on the road with little traffic just because it was a public holiday but above all it was early. The lake that was on our right gave incredible panoramas and the ups and downs took us to Varenna.

Part # 4 are stages starting in Colico crossing the towns of Bellano (it is famous for the natural gorge of the Orrido di Bellano), Parledo, Varenna, Lierna, Abbadia Lariana and Lecco.

Varenna is a pretty village in the central part of Lake Como. This picturesque jewel offers boat services in the towns of Bellaggio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio. In this traditional fishing boat village there is much to visit on foot between colourful houses and villas built close to each others, views of the lake, churches and everything else that surrounds which we saw after leaving our bikes in a safe place. We headed to Varenna's pier (a ferry terminal) which is a short walk away and the scenic and romantic Camminata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Walk) runs along a promenade above the edge of the lake which leads to the heart of the historic centre where quaint shops are found having various crafts, restaurants with traditional cuisine and more. We didn't go into the heart of the centre as we didn't have enough time but the walk is worth it!

Once we got back on our bicycles, we continued pedalling along the shore of the lake on the very quiet provincial road (SP72) but once we got to Abbadia Lariana there is a stretch where the road merges with the busy SS36 and for now there was no choice but to continue with caution until you reach the new section of the cycle path that begins Pirandello. We stopped there for a break at Pirandello beach bar where you can admire the lake and the mountains. Let's hope the road restrictions for construction on the second section really will take us to Abbadia. It's really a great shame for us cyclists to have to immerse ourselves in that noisy and really dangerous stretch of road! Let's hope so!

After the break and with great happiness we cycled the Abbadia-Lecco and we arrived at the city of Lecco.
