Milan On Foot - Tour #4  Girovagando/Wandering through the main attractions of Milan, Lombardy Italy page 2

After leaving Piazza Duomo, we walked for a few minutes and arrived at il Varziere; its name “verzee" in the Milanese dialect is associated with the presence of an "agricultural market”. On Il Varziere, there was the great old greengrocer street market that has been relocated several times, and it is now in Via Lombroso, a clearing that connects Largo Augusto with Via Verziere in Milan.

This area was beloved by the famous Italian poet Carlo Porta (b. before 1800s). He was mostly a Milanese dialect poet. One of his famous peotic works composed in Milanese dialect was "La Ninetta del Verzee".

Nearby is the Piazza Santo Stefano where is located the San Bernardino alle Ossa church, renowned for its ossuary, a small side chapel decorated with all the human bones and skeletons ( (which come from leper patients of a 12th century hospital). This church of medieval origins stands in an ancient cemetery area which was located in the green spaces of the so-called orchard. “Brolo" is a term of Celtic origin.

And here is the inside of the church...

On the ceiling of the ossuarry there is the wonderful fresco The "Triumph of Souls in a Flight of Angels" by Sebastiano Ricci.

After visiting the San Bernardino alle Ossa ossuary, next to it is the Basilicata di Santo Stefano Maggiore and we visited it inside. Very beautiful, large and full of historical church built on 5th century. This Basilicata is where the Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza of Milan was assassinated in the 1400s..
