Alpe Scoggione - Scoggione Refuge -  Baita del Lago Hike in Sondrio, (LC) Lombardy Italy                  Added (02/2022)

The Scoggione refuge is located in a very panoramic position on Lake Como and the lower Valtellina, between the provinces of Sondrio and Lecco.

From The Alpe Scoccione / The ref. Scoggione is located at the foot of the most important Legnone and there are various hiking trails that lead in other directions and from the Baita del Lago between here starts the path and the more imposing Legnone. In this excursion we did not take the direction of Legnone because we knew it was not the right season despite the fact that we have already climbed it and on another occasion we would be on its wonderful peak. Today we admired it at the foot of Alpe Scoccione which is still a wonderful panoramic hike!

The route

- Villattico - Alpe Scoggione - The ref. Scoggione -  The biv. Baita del Lago - Villattco -

Departure: Villatco, Colico Lecco (LC)

Elevation gain: 919 m

Route Type: Out & Back

Lenth: 10.9 Km

Time taken for round trip: 5:06:11

Difficulty: Demanding

The adventure began by motorbike from Colico crossing Villatico continuing to Robustello, then towards Fontanedo (599 m) and finally Rusico (743 m), where we parked the motorbike.

With our backpacka on, we continued on foot on the path marked with red and white flags. In more or less 30 minutes we arrived at Alpe Prato (958 m) near a fountain.

Then we followed the path still in the woods up to Piana di Formica (1218 m).

Then the path continues in the pine forest following steep hairpin bends up to the locality Bancol.

From this point the path becomes less steep  but as you go up the path there is more snow.

The refuge Scoggione with a nice sign Benvenuti/welcomes us to Scoggione, a cross and a hand-carved wooden sculpture, How beautiful!

We reached Alpe Scoggione (1500 m) and continued walking in the snow which led us to a bivouac. It is a mountain construction and is located at a high altitude. They are used as: as an emergency shelter or a stop for trekking lasting several days in this case for those on the Gran Via delle Orobieun.

Il Bivaccio has two floors and here is the interior ...

The route continues on the mule track passing over the Ponte del Saggio after which we follow the signs for Monte Legnone to the Baita del Lago.

And here behind us the north face has a magnificent view of the majestic Monte Legnone at 2,609 m. We hiked its summit years ago but this time we can only admire it by greeting it with a Hello and with two words: We will return to the summit again and it will be our next adventure!

Then we reached the Baita del Lago (1690 m) and from there we admired a magnificent panorama, one towards the mountain and the other of the upper Lario. Wow what a breathtaking view!

After leaving the Baita del Lago the path leading to the cross was windy and cold! After a short climb on the small peak there is the cross where we observed an enchanting panorama!
