Left ferry very early, at dawn. Trapani is a typical port town - I don't have that much to recommended although the palm trees, wind and ocean we found beautiful - especially at dawn which is when the ferry arrives.
Situated on the west coast of Sicily, head east from Trapani via highway 187 - a good road because there is very light traffic for Valderice - which will involve some intense hill climbing but some very rewarding views. From Valderice, continue along 187 past hilly, dry farm country toward the Gulf of Castellammare and the town of the same name. There is a very panoramic view just before you descend into the town.
From Castellamare, continue along the shoreline for Balestrate, and Trappeto. The combination of the sea, beaches and dry, gold and white mountains we found very pretty.
There is a short inland stretch at Terrasisi before you will head back toward the sea and high above the Gulf of Carini. There is a good campsite and very attractive small fishing town at Isola d Femmine (campsite is open all year).
The day’s cycling will definitely be hills, but traffic volume should be very low. This is a great location for seeing the sights of Palermo, it is only about 15 Km down the road and is a quiet, relaxed and safe base from which to take in the sights.
Stayed at camping at Isola delle Femmine just outside Palermo.
