This scenic adventure starts in Vancouver and takes you through some of British Columbia’s most dramatic landscapes: the Fraser River Canyon, historic gold rush towns, remote valleys, and the rugged peaks of the Coast Mountains.

The loop passes through Hope, Lytton, Lillooet, Gold Bridge/Bralorne, then via the Hurley River Road to Pemberton, before returning to Vancouver through Whistler and Squamish.

Driving this route is an immersion into wild nature, with mountains, lakes, historic mining towns, and traces of First Nations culture. The trip I describe took place in late October 2020, when the autumn colors highlighted the stunning scenery.

tinerary Overview

Day 1 – Vancouver → Hope → Lytton → Lillooet

Depart Vancouver heading east toward Hope, a charming town nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountains, surrounded by wilderness. Continue along the Fraser River Canyon, with breathtaking river views and dramatic cliffs. Stop at Lytton, located above the Fraser River, for spectacular views of the canyon and surrounding mountains. Overnight in Lillooet, a town rich in wildlife, history, and culture.

Day 2 – Lillooet → Gold Bridge → Bralorne

From Lillooet, head west along Highway 40 into the Bridge River Valley, a scenic area steeped in gold rush history. Visit Bralorne, once the richest gold mine in Canadian history, and Gold Bridge, a tiny community of just 40 residents. Explore the historic mining remnants and enjoy the solitude and rugged beauty of the valley. Overnight in the Bridge River area.

Day 3 – Bridge River Valley → Pemberton (Hurley River Road)

The famous Hurley River Road, a 74 km gravel wilderness route, connects the Bridge River Valley with the Pemberton Valley. This road climbs over Railroad Pass (4,500 ft) and offers panoramic mountain views, alpine lakes, and pristine wilderness. The road is seasonal and usually opens only after snow melts in late spring. Overnight in Pemberton, a hub for outdoor adventure.

Day 4 – Pemberton → Whistler → Squamish → Vancouver

Return south toward Vancouver through the stunning Whistler and Squamish region. Enjoy mountain vistas, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, before arriving back in the city.
