The journey blends outdoor adventure, cultural discovery, and serene island life, offering a short but truly memorable escape.
Known for its pristine landscapes, Salt Spring invites exploration: hiking scenic trails, cycling along quiet roads, paddling in calm waters, and spotting whales in the Salish Sea. On the island, we explored Ruckle Provincial Park with its rugged coastline and peaceful trails, wandered along Burgoyne Bay, and hiked up to Mount Maxwell for sweeping views across Salt Spring and the Gulf Islands.
After soaking in the island’s charm, we returned to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, where historic streets, gardens, and cultural landmarks awaited. This final stop brought together the region’s coastal beauty and rich heritage before we returned to Vancouver via the Swartz Bay–Tsawwassen ferry.
In just two days, this journey revealed the wild beauty of the Gulf Islands and the cultural elegance of Victoria an experience filled with nature, history, adventure, and moments of relaxation.

Gulf Islands & Capital Charm: 2-Day Journey to Salt Spring Island & Victoria in British Columbia, Canada
Day 2: Salt Spring Island → Ruckle Provincial Park → Burgoyne Bay → Mount Maxwell → Victoria → Vancouver
The next morning, we left the campsite and visited Ruckle Heritage Farm, the oldest working family farm in the Gulf Islands (founded in 1872), nestled within Ruckle Provincial Park. The farm offered a fascinating glimpse into Salt Spring Island’s agricultural heritage and timeless traditions.
From there, we headed to Burgoyne Bay Provincial Park, a place of deep cultural significance for the Salt Spring Island First Nations. Hiking through lush forest trails, we arrived at the tranquil oyster reefs of Burgoyne Bay, where a handful of boats were peacefully moored. A local man with an oyster harvesting license kindly opened a fresh oyster for me a unique and authentic taste of the island.
Our journey then continued south along Fulford Ganges Road, where we turned onto Mount Maxwell Road. The narrow, steep gravel climb led us to Mount Maxwell Provincial Park.
At the summit, we parked and followed a short trail to the viewing area. From there, sweeping panoramic vistas revealed the full beauty of Salt Spring and the surrounding Gulf Islands. As the sun began to set, the sky lit up in a palette of warm colors reflecting across the ocean—one of the most magical moments of the trip.
Later, we returned by ferry to Swartz Bay and spent the evening exploring Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Even though I had visited before, the city never loses its charm. Strolling along the Inner Harbour, admiring the Parliament Buildings from the outside always a magnificent sightvisiting historic monuments, and relaxing in cozy cafés made the visit truly memorable.
Together, Salt Spring Island and Victoria offered the perfect balance of wild landscapes, outdoor adventures, cultural discoveries, and moments of relaxation an unforgettable two-day journey in the heart of British Columbia.
