Whether you’re exploring hidden beaches, wandering through old-growth forests, or enjoying the local culture and seafood, Vancouver Island offers unforgettable experiences at every turn of the road.
Day 1: Victoria → Port Renfrew → Botanical Beach → Ucluelet
Our adventure began with the ferry from Tsawwassen Terminal in Vancouver to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. From Victoria, we drove along the island’s southwest coastline, winding through forests and scenic viewpoints.
Port Renfrew welcomed us with its panoramic zigzag roads, perfect for stopping at small campsites or parking areas. Along the way, we explored some of the island’s most beautiful beaches: French Beach, Sandcut Beach, Mystic Beach, Bear Beach, China Beach, Sombrio Beach, and the incredible Botanical Beach, famous for tide pools and fascinating marine life.
Next, we took the Botanical Beach Loop Trail, an easy walk along the rugged coast. Here, we spotted wildlife, explored tide pools, and enjoyed the sound of waves crashing on the rocks. The surrounding forest added a magical feel, making this trail a highlight of the day.
In the afternoon, we reached Ucluelet, on the edge of Pacific Rim National Park. The village offered plenty of outdoor activities hiking along the coast, surfing, fishing, or simply enjoying the view of the Pacific.
Day 2: Ucluelet → Tofino → Cathedral Grove → Fanny Bay → Coombs → Englishman River Falls → Malahat → Victoria
We started early, driving the short distance to Tofino, a paradise on the remote west coast. Here, we explored Long Beach, stretching over 30 km, a true haven for surfers and nature lovers. The morning light made the waves sparkle, and the vast horizon felt endless.
Heading inland, we visited Cathedral Grove, walking among ancient trees, some 800 years old, and marvelling at the serene forest atmosphere.
On the east coast of the island, Fanny Bay offered hiking trails and a taste of the famous farm-raised oysters and Manila clams. Nearby, Coombs charmed us with its old heritage buildings, craft shops, and the quirky Old Country Market, where goats grazed on the grass-covered roof.
Next, we stopped at Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, walking a loop trail through old cedar, hemlock, maple, and Douglas fir forests, before marveling at two stunning waterfalls.
Finally, we drove up to Malahat, where a lookout offered sweeping views of Vancouver Island. A visit to the Malahat Skywalk, a spiral tower above the treetops, provided a perfect panoramic finale. By evening, we returned to Victoria, closing our 2-day adventure on the island.
Returning to Vancouver via Ferry
After two unforgettable days exploring the natural beauty and charming communities of Vancouver Island, we made our way back to Victoria to catch the ferry to Vancouver. The journey across the shimmering waters of the Strait of Georgia offered a peaceful conclusion to our adventure, with views of the island fading into the distance and the mainland approaching on the horizon.
The ferry ride is not just a connection between the island and the city it’s a moment to reflect on the stunning landscapes, wildlife encounters, and hidden gems discovered along the way. Arriving back in Vancouver, we carried with us the memories of an incredible two-day road trip filled with adventure, nature, and the unique charm of British Columbia.
