The South Cariboo Country and Fraser River Canyon in British Columbia, Canada, offer a spectacular combination of rugged mountains, wild rivers, historic communities, and pristine lakes. This circular route, starting and ending in Vancouver, takes travelers through some of the province’s most iconic landscapes, from the alpine peaks of Whistler to the remote wilderness of D’Arcy, Seton Portage, and Mission Pass.
Along the way, adventurers encounter thrilling gravel roads, panoramic vistas, and charming towns steeped in history. The journey also includes opportunities to explore the Fraser River Canyon, observe wildlife, and visit striking lakes such as Anderson, Seton, and Carpenter. Perfect for a two-day road trip, this route captures the essence of British Columbia’s natural beauty, combining outdoor adventure, scenic drives, and cultural experiences into one unforgettable journey.
Day 1: Vancouver → Whistler → Squamish → Pemberton → D’Arcy → Seton Portage
Our adventure begins in Vancouver, heading north along the scenic Sea-to-Sky Highway toward Whistler, one of North America’s largest and most famous ski resorts. Even in summer, Whistler is a hub of activity with hiking, biking, and stunning alpine views.
Continuing north, we pass through Squamish, known as the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada,” and arrive in Pemberton, a charming village surrounded by mountains, rivers, and farmland. From here, the journey becomes wilder as we follow the Highline Road (Douglas Trail), a rugged gravel route connecting Pemberton/D’Arcy to Seton Portage. The road winds through hills and valleys, offering breathtaking views of Anderson Lake and the surrounding wilderness.
In D’Arcy, a small unincorporated community, we take a moment to enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings before reaching Seton Portage, home to the oldest railway in British Columbia. The area between Seton Lake and Anderson Lake is steeped in history and provides a perfect introduction to the remote landscapes of the Fraser River Canyon.
Day 2: Mission Pass → Fraser River Canyon → Lytton → Lillooet → Carpenter Lake → Return to Vancouver
Day two starts with the thrilling drive along Mission Pass (Mission Ridge). At 3,690 ft, this historic mountain pass offers narrow gravel roads hugging the edge of the mountain, with spectacular views over the valleys below. Adventure lovers will find this route both challenging and rewarding.
From Mission Pass, we descend into the Fraser River Canyon, passing through Lytton, a small but historic community perched above the river. The dramatic canyon scenery is a highlight of the journey, with towering cliffs, fast-flowing waters, and wildlife sightings along the way.
Next, we arrive in Lillooet, located at the foot of the Coast Mountains. Lillooet is rich in history, wildlife, and natural beauty, making it an ideal place to stretch our legs and explore.
Along the route, we encounter three remarkable lakes:
Anderson Lake, perfect for a quiet stop and recreational activities.
Seton Lake, with its historical significance and serene waters.
Carpenter Lake (Carpenter Lake Reservoir), the largest of the three Bridge River Power Project reservoirs, surrounded by striking mountain landscapes.
Finally, we loop back to Vancouver, completing a two-day adventure through South Cariboo Country and the Fraser River Canyon. This journey offers a mix of mountain roads, remote wilderness, historic communities, and breathtaking lakesa true taste of British Columbia’s diverse landscapes.
