Conquering the Abby Grind: Abbotsford’s Steep Fitness Trail, British Columbia, Canada

After parking at the  gravel lot on Lakemount Road, I set off on the Abby Grind trail. The path wastes no time it begins climbing immediately,  switchbacking steeply through the forest.

My legs and lungs felt the challenge right away, but the woodland setting and the promise of spectacular views kept me motivated as I started the ascent. Not far into the hike, I came to the ¼  marker.

The trail briefly leveled out here, giving me a chance to catch my breath before the incline kicked in again. Just before the  ½  marker, the climb became one of the steepest sections, testing both stamina and determination. Pushing through, I finally reached a spot where the trail flattened slightly the perfect place for a quick rest.

Continuing upward, I arrived at the  ¾  marker, where the trail splits. To the right, a steeper but shorter route leads more directly to the viewpoint. To the left, a longer but gentler path is better for descending. I chose the right side on the way up, keeping an eye out for the left trail to return on later.

Reaching the top of the Abby Grind, you arrive at the Taggart Peak viewpoint. I did not continue further on this hike, but  many hikers stop here, as it marks the end of the  “ Grind ” portion of the trail.

Others continue onward to the higher summit of Taggart Peak for even more panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The final stretch to the summit leads to a rocky bluff, a breathtaking spot to pause, take photos, and fully appreciate the landscape.

Even though the Abby Grind is short, it packs a great cardio workout and stunning scenery into just 2 km. Continuing to Taggart Peak adds an additional challenge and reward for those seeking a longer adventure.
