Climbing the Grind: An Epic Ascent of Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The Grouse Grind Trail (also known as Mother Nature's Stair-master) is set within the North Shore Mountains of the Pacific Coast Mountain Range, in the District Municipality of North Vancouver. It is a very steep trail that starts at 300 metres elevation and climbs to 1,100 metres over a distance of approximately 2.5 kilometres. This short yet challenging trail is one of the most iconic hikes in Vancouver.
Renowned as Vancouver's most used trail, the Grouse Grind is a true test of endurance, requiring strength, stamina, and determination. Many locals use it for fitness training, which can make the trail crowded, but by starting later in the afternoon I had the Grind almost entirely to myself. It was a fantastic workout and a serious cardio challenge relentlessly uphill and consistently steep!
What makes the Grouse Grind truly special is the contrast: one moment you are in the bustling city of Vancouver, and in less than an hour you find yourself on a wild, forested trail climbing steeply through the trees. The sound of the city disappears, replaced by the crunch of gravel underfoot, the rhythm of your breath, and the occasional call of a bird echoing through the woods. Reaching the top as the afternoon light began to fade, I felt a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration an achievement that every step had earned. Looking out over Vancouver from above, with the ocean and mountains stretching beyond, was simply unforgettable.
The fastest known time to the top is just under 24 minutes, while the average hiker takes between 2 to 2.5 hours to complete the ascent. My own time for the climb was 50 minutes, making it a personal challenge and achievement.
At the summit of Grouse Mountain, I took time to wander and enjoy the attractions. One highlight is the refuge for endangered wildlife, included in the Mountain Admission ticket, where you can see two rescued grizzly bears, Grinder and Coola.
In addition to the wildlife sanctuary, there are a variety of entertainment options available year-round, including:
Lumberjack Show – a thrilling performance and competition showcasing the skills of professional loggers.
Theatre in the Sky – live shows with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
Mountain Zip-lining – an adrenaline-filled way to experience the forest from above.
Sebastian Salas – enjoy music and performances by this talented artist.
You cannot hike down the Grouse Grind; the Skyride is the only way down, available for $20. The Skyride glides through untouched nature, offering spectacular, breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
