Left 8:30.....

Continue east along the shoreline on highway 113. There should be relatively low traffic as you pass several small coastal towns such as Finale, Milianni, Cstel di Tust, S. Stefano to Acquedolci. The road should be fairly easy with few hills. After Aquedolci, bear right and follow the signs for San Fratello.

The road up to San Fratello will be steep and difficult - especially if it is hot so make sure to bring plenty of water. The height of San Fratello is 675 metres.

San Fratello, a sleepy town at the foot of the Nebrodi Mountains in eastern Sicily on the edge of the forest and high above the ocean.

San Fratello is famous for the Sanfratellano dei Nebrodi horse (or breed of San Fratello) which is an Italian breed originally from the Messina area. These horses still live in the wild, within a wooded area of San Fratello’s surroundings.

There is one hotel which is basic but adequate - to find it (its not well marked) just ask a local and they will probably be the nephew or cousin of the owner. If you prefer not stay at the hotel, there will be many opportunities for wild camping - but make sure you are stocked up on supplies as the are no stores for a long time after San Fratello.

I would recommend a visit to the town simply because there are no tourists and you get a real feel for Sicilian life. The people are incredibly friendly - just a hello and you will probably be offered dinner or a least a refreshment. As well, perched high on a 3 sided cliff, the town itself is worth an exploration. As well, by climbing up you should get a nice drop in temperature.
